NEPHI 1
1:9 And it came to pass that he saw one descending out of the midst of Heaven, and he beheld that his lustre was above that of the sun at noon-day;

       You dont get passed the first couple verses in the book without having "the red light come on", let alone the title of the chapter. Mormon "hierchy" interpretation states that the ONE who came down is Christ and the 12 are the 12 patriarchs and "higher up" the 12 TRIBES. Thus, we find BLASPHEMY AND EVIL in the very first chapter and the revelation of FALLEN ANGELS who came to earth aka Gen.6. In the mystery religions, the concept of SECRET ARCANE KNOWLEDGE being passed through the flood from the 'AEONS' or rather "avatars" is prevelant and we see this concept coming to light in these first couple verses. According to them, the occult, "ENOCH" plays a centarl role in this development of "passing down the knowledge". Enoch is a very central and imporatnt figure in the occult, lucifereanism, new age, and flat out satanism. The "code" that reveals its SATAN as the "one" who descends is found in verse 9 where it states that "his LUSTRE was ABOVE that of the SUN at NOON DAY". Jesus Christ is simlituded as THE SUN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS in the bible (Mal.4:2). As well, his return and "DESTRUCTION BY THE BRIGHTNESS OF HIS COMEING" is related to that of "NOON" (Psa.91:6 etc.). I have found that SATANISM and SATANISTS love flaunting the evil and power of there God SATAN hidden within there "code" as a MOCKING against christainisty and the Lord Jesus Christ. This is no different here in Nephi 1:9 wherein SATAN is placed "above" the LUSTRE/BRIGHTNESS of the SUN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS JESUS CHRIST and a subtle taunt of his supposed VICTORY against the Lord at his second coming...AT NOON!.

ETHER

1:1 Chapter 1 And now I, Moroni, proceed to give an account of those ancient inhabitants which were destroyed by the hand of the Lord upon the face of this north country.
1:2 And I take mine account from the twenty and four plates which were found by the people of Limhi, which is called the Book of Ether.
1:3 And as I suppose that the first part of this record, which speaketh concerning the creation of the world, and also of Adam, an account from that time even to the great tower, and whatsoever things transpired among the children of men until that time, is had among the Jews,
1:4 therefore I do not write those things which transpired from the days of Adam until that time; but they are had upon the plates; and whoso findeth them, the same will have power that he may get the full account.

         The book of Ether in the BOM will now give an account of what transpired at the time of the flood. However, "NEPHI" speaking for the so-called Ether states the record is had AMONG THE JEWS thus hes only going to give a partial account and does not refer to the time from Adam to the flood and why??? BECAUSE THE JEWISH RECORD IS CONTRIVED TO "HIDE" WHAT THE BOM WISHES TO "SECRETLY CONVEY" TO ITS "DEVOTEES"!!!. Wherein the holy bible places the TOWER OF BABEL "after" the flood, the BOM places it "BEFORE" as well see.

1:32 and Kib was the son of Orihah, which was the son of Jared;

So you see, this text in the BOM, these couple of verses are revealing more than a couple HERESIES that fit perfectly into the NEPHILLIM agenda. Jared and his mysterious "brother" who is a LARGE/MIGHTY MAN definatviely infering "GIANT/NEPHILLIM" prays to "his" god in which his god does NOT "confound" Jared and "his brother". This is contrary the scriptures which indicates ALL were 'confounded and scattered upon the face of the earth. But note the distinct reference to jareds brother being a ......."LARGE"..........and "MIGHTY" man almost blatantly infering Jareds brother was a NEPHILLIM/GIANT".

1:39 And it came to pass that the brother of Jared did cry unto the Lord according to that which had been spoken by the mouth of Jared.
1:40 And it came to pass that the Lord did hear the brother Jared, and had compassion upon him, and said unto him,
1:41 Go to and gather together thy flocks, both male and female, of every kind; and also of the seed of the earth of every kind, and thy families; and also Jared thy brother and his family; and also thy friends and their families, and the friend of Jared and their families.
1:42 And when thou hast done this, thou shalt go at the head of them down into the valley, which is northward. And there will I meet thee, and I will go before thee into a land which is choice above all the land of the earth.

        As you can see, Jared and his brother are getting the ABRAHAM treatment, meaning, this is REPLACEMENT theology and is indicating Jared and his enigmatic "brother" of the "GOODLY COMPANY" are replacing Abraham as heir apparant of the first covenant!!!!. Not only Jared and brother, but also their "FREINDS" and their families. Now remeber, the BOM places the tower of babel BEFORE the flood in certain circumspect. This must be noted.

Interesting to note that the book of ETHER is connected to the word "HEAVEN" and SHEM in the bible which is refered to as THE HIGHER ETHER. 2:11 And this cometh unto you, O ye Gentiles, that ye may know the decrees of God, that ye may repent, and not continue in your iniquities until the fulness be come, that ye may not bring down the fulness of the wrath of God upon you, as the inhabitants of the land hitherto done.
2:12 Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it, shall be free from bondage, and captivity, and from all other nations under the Heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, which is Jesus Christ, which hath been manifested by the things which we have written.
2:13 And now I proceed with my record: for behold it came to pass that the Lord did bring Jared and his brethren forth even to that great sea which divideth the lands. And as they came to the sea, they pitched their tents; and they called the name of the place Moriancumer; and they dwelt in tents; and dwelt in tents upon the seashore for the space of four years.

NEPHI 3

28:6 And he saith unto them, Behold, I know your thoughts, and ye have desired the thing which John, my beloved, which was with me in my ministry, before that I was lifted up by the Jews, desired of me;
28:7 therefore more blessed are ye, for ye shall never taste of death, but ye shall live to behold all the doings of the Father, unto the children of men, even until things shall be fulfilled, according to the will of the Father, when I shall come in my glory, with the powers of heaven;

28:16 But it came to pass that they did again minister upon the face of the earth; nevertheless they did not minister of the things which they had heard and seen, because of the commandment which was given them in heaven.
28:17 And now whether they were mortal or immortal, from the day of their transfiguration, I know not;
28:18 but this much I know: According to the record which hath been given, they did go forth upon the face of the land, and did minister unto all the people, uniting as many to the church as would believe in their preaching; baptizing them; and as many as were baptized, did receive the Holy Ghost;
28:19 and they were cast into prison by them who did not belong to the church. And the prisons could not hold them, for they were rent in twain,
28:20 and they were cast down into the earth. But they did not smite the earth with the word of God, insomuch that by his power they were delivered out of the depths of the earth; and therefore they could not dig pits sufficiently to hold them.......

It is I who am in you, and you are in me, just as the Father is in you in innocence.

Let us gather an assembly together. Let us visit that creation of his. Let us send someone forth in it, just as he visited (the) Ennoias, the regions below. And I said these things to the whole multitude of the multitudinous assembly of the rejoicing Majesty. The whole house of the Father of Truth rejoiced that I am the one who is from them. I produced thought about the Ennoias which came out of the undefiled Spirit, about the descent upon the water, that is, the regions below. And they all had a single mind, since it is out of one. They charged me since I was willing. I came forth to reveal the glory to my kindred and my fellow spirits.

For those who were in the world had been prepared by the will of our sister Sophia - she who is a whore - because of the innocence which has not been uttered. And she did not ask anything from the All, nor from the greatness of the Assembly, nor from the Pleroma. Since she was first, she came forth to prepare monads and places for the Son of Light and the fellow workers which she took from the elements below to build bodily dwellings from them. But, having come into being in an empty glory, they ended in destruction in the dwellings in which they were, since they were prepared by Sophia. They stand ready to receive the life-giving word of the ineffable Monad and of the greatness of the assembly of all those
who persevere and those who are in me.

I visited a bodily dwelling. I cast out the one who was in it first, and I went in.
And the whole multitude of the archons became troubled. And all the matter of the archons, as well as all the begotten powers of the earth, were shaken when it saw the likeness of the Image, since it was mixed. is against intercourse through marriage, and they came and decreed even against
immoral connection with them.
 But the decree against such connection had already been made

Scientists Debate Blending Of Human, Animal Forms

In Minnesota, pigs are being born with human blood in their veins.

In Nevada, there are sheep whose livers and hearts are largely human.

In California, mice peer from their cages with human brain cells firing inside their skulls.

These are not outcasts from "The Island of Dr. Moreau," the 1896 novel by H.G. Wells in which a rogue doctor develops creatures that are part animal and part human. They are real creations of real scientists, stretching the boundaries of stem cell research.

Biologists call these hybrid animals chimeras, after the mythical Greek creature with a lion's head, a goat's body and a serpent's tail. They are the products of experiments in which human stem cells were added to developing animal fetuses.

Chimeras are allowing scientists to watch, for the first time, how nascent human cells and organs mature and interact -- not in the cold isolation of laboratory dishes but inside the bodies of living creatures. Some are already revealing deep secrets of human biology and pointing the way toward new medical treatments.

But with no federal guidelines in place, an awkward question hovers above the work: How human must a chimera be before more stringent research rules should kick in?

The National Academy of Sciences, which advises the federal government, has been studying the issue and hopes to make recommendations by February. Yet the range of opinions it has received so far suggests that reaching consensus may be difficult.

During one recent meeting, scientists disagreed on such basic issues as whether it would be unethical for a human embryo to begin its development in an animal's womb, and whether a mouse would be better or worse off with a brain made of human neurons.

"This is an area where we really need to come to a reasonable consensus," said James Battey, chairman of the National Institutes of Health's Stem Cell Task Force. "We need to establish some kind of guidelines as to what the scientific community ought to do and ought not to do."

Chimeras (ki-MER-ahs) -- meaning mixtures of two or more individuals in a single body -- are not inherently unnatural. Most twins carry at least a few cells from the sibling with whom they shared a womb, and most mothers carry in their blood at least a few cells from each child they have born.

Recipients of organ transplants are also chimeras, as are the many people whose defective heart valves have been replaced with those from pigs or cows. And scientists for years have added human genes to bacteria and even to farm animals -- feats of genetic engineering that allow those critters to make human proteins such as insulin for use as medicines.

"Chimeras are not as strange and alien as at first blush they seem," said Henry Greely, a law professor and ethicist at Stanford University who has reviewed proposals to create human-mouse chimeras there.

But chimerism becomes a more sensitive topic when it involves growing entire human organs inside animals. And it becomes especially sensitive when it deals in brain cells, the building blocks of the organ credited with making humans human.

In experiments like those, Greely told the academy last month, "there is a nontrivial risk of conferring some significant aspects of humanity" on the animal.

Greely and his colleagues did not conclude that such experiments should never be done. Indeed, he and many other philosophers have been wrestling with the question of why so many people believe it is wrong to breach the species barrier.

Does the repugnance reflect an understanding of an important natural law? Or is it just another cultural bias, like the once widespread rejection of interracial marriage?

Many turn to the Bible's repeated invocation that animals should multiply "after their kind" as evidence that such experiments are wrong. Others, however, have concluded that the core problem is not necessarily the creation of chimeras but rather the way they are likely to be treated.

Imagine, said Robert Streiffer, a professor of philosophy and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin, a human-chimpanzee chimera endowed with speech and an enhanced potential to learn -- what some have called a "humanzee."

"There's a knee-jerk reaction that enhancing the moral status of an animal is bad," Streiffer said. "But if you did it, and you gave it the protections it deserves, how could the animal complain?"

Unfortunately, said Harvard political philosopher Michael J. Sandel, speaking last fall at a meeting of the President's Council on Bioethics, such protections are unlikely.

"Chances are we would make them perform menial jobs or dangerous jobs," Sandel said. "That would be an objection."

The potential power of chimeras as research tools became clear about a decade ago in a series of dramatic experiments by Evan Balaban, now at McGill University in Montreal. Balaban took small sections of brain from developing quails and transplanted them into the developing brains of chickens.

The resulting chickens exhibited vocal trills and head bobs unique to quails, proving that the transplanted parts of the brain contained the neural circuitry for quail calls. It also offered astonishing proof that complex behaviors could be transferred across species.

No one has proposed similar experiments between, say, humans and apes. But the discovery of human embryonic stem cells in 1998 allowed researchers to envision related experiments that might reveal a lot about how embryos grow.

The cells, found in 5-day-old human embryos, multiply prolifically and -- unlike adult cells -- have the potential to turn into any of the body's 200 or so cell types.

Scientists hope to cultivate them in laboratory dishes and grow replacement tissues for patients. But with those applications years away, the cells are gaining in popularity for basic research.

The most radical experiment, still not conducted, would be to inject human stem cells into an animal embryo and then transfer that chimeric embryo into an animal's womb. Scientists suspect the proliferating human cells would spread throughout the animal embryo as it matured into a fetus and integrate themselves into every organ.

Such "humanized" animals could have countless uses. They would almost certainly provide better ways to test a new drug's efficacy and toxicity, for example, than the ordinary mice typically used today.

But few scientists are eager to do that experiment. The risk, they say, is that some human cells will find their way to the developing testes or ovaries, where they might grow into human sperm and eggs. If two such chimeras -- say, mice -- were to mate, a human embryo might form, trapped in a mouse.

Not everyone agrees that this would be a terrible result.

"What would be so dreadful?" asked Ann McLaren, a renowned developmental biologist at the University of Cambridge in England. After all, she said, no human embryo could develop successfully in a mouse womb. It would simply die, she told the academy. No harm done.

But others disagree -- if only out of fear of a public backlash.

"Certainly you'd get a negative response from people to have a human embryo trying to grow in the wrong place," said Cynthia B. Cohen, a senior research fellow at Georgetown University's Kennedy Institute of Ethics and a member of Canada's Stem Cell Oversight Committee, which supported a ban on such experiments there.

But what about experiments in which scientists add human stem cells not to an animal embryo but to an animal fetus, which has already made its eggs and sperm? Then the only question is how human a creature one dares to make.

In one ongoing set of experiments, Jeffrey L. Platt at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., has created human-pig chimeras by adding human-blood-forming stem cells to pig fetuses. The resulting pigs have both pig and human blood in their vessels. And it's not just pig blood cells being swept along with human blood cells; some of the cells themselves have merged, creating hybrids.

It is important to have learned that human and pig cells can fuse, Platt said, because he and others have been considering transplanting modified pig organs into people and have been wondering if that might pose a risk of pig viruses getting into patient's cells. Now scientists know the risk is real, he said, because the viruses may gain access when the two cells fuse.

In other experiments led by Esmail Zanjani, chairman of animal biotechnology at the University of Nevada at Reno, scientists have been adding human stem cells to sheep fetuses. The team now has sheep whose livers are up to 80 percent human -- and make all the compounds human livers make.

Zanjani's goal is to make the humanized livers available to people who need transplants. The sheep portions will be rejected by the immune system, he predicted, while the human part will take root.

"I don't see why anyone would raise objections to our work," Zanjani said in an interview.

Perhaps the most ambitious efforts to make use of chimeras come from Irving Weissman, director of Stanford University's Institute of Cancer/Stem Cell Biology and Medicine. Weissman helped make the first mouse with a nearly complete human immune system -- an animal that has proved invaluable for tests of new drugs against the AIDS virus, which does not infect conventional mice.

More recently his team injected human neural stem cells into mouse fetuses, creating mice whose brains are about 1 percent human. By dissecting the mice at various stages, the researchers were able to see how the added brain cells moved about as they multiplied and made connections with mouse cells.

Already, he said, they have learned things they "never would have learned had there been a bioethical ban."

Now he wants to add human brain stem cells that have the defects that cause Parkinson's disease, Lou Gehrig's disease and other brain ailments -- and study how those cells make connections.

Scientists suspect that these diseases, though they manifest themselves in adulthood, begin when something goes wrong early in development. If those errors can be found, researchers would have a much better chance of designing useful drugs, Weissman said. And those drugs could be tested in the chimeras in ways not possible in patients.

Now Weissman says he is thinking about making chimeric mice whose brains are 100 percent human. He proposes keeping tabs on the mice as they develop. If the brains look as if they are taking on a distinctly human architecture -- a development that could hint at a glimmer of humanness -- they could be killed, he said. If they look as if they are organizing themselves in a mouse brain architecture, they could be used for research.

So far this is just a "thought experiment," Weissman said, but he asked the university's ethics group for an opinion anyway.

"Everyone said the mice would be useful," he said. "But no one was sure if it should be done."

WWhen Watson and Crick published their proposed structure for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in 1953, they ushered in a half-century of biological research that brings reality eye to eye with Shelley’s fiction. In brief, here are some of the new biotechnologies:

Nuclear transfer. In 1997, the first successful example of the cloning of an adult mammal was presented to the world in the form of Dolly the sheep. Since then, hundreds of other sheep, and cattle, have been cloned using nuclear material from a differentiated, or body, cell. Writing in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science in 2000, Van’t Hoog, de Cock Buning and Hazekamp consider the animal welfare aspects of this work. In addition to certain physical anomalies that affect the animals’ health and well-being, the authors question what the impact of large-scale production of clones might be on the value of animal life in a world that already struggles to value the lives of individual farm and research animals apart from their commercial interest.

Then there is Missy the dog. Most dog lovers attest to having had one dog who stands apart from all others. Missy is such a dog to her family in Texas, and while she is still alive, her human caretakers want to ensure that her great qualities endure. Although Missy, a mixed-breed shelter dog, has been spayed, her family has the means to endow a substantial research project at Texas A&M University, with the goal of cloning Missy. Everyone involved fully understands that while a clone will be a genetic copy of Missy, the inability to duplicate her life experiences precludes the creation of an exact copy that will be another Missy.

In addressing the ethical aspects of the “Missyplicity” project, the Texas research team has considered everything from, “Why clone dogs when there are so many homeless pets in shelters?” to “Is this a case of playing God?” They point out that their research, in addition to cloning Missy, will provide a substantial benefit to the welfare of all dogs. The knowledge that is gained on canine reproductive physiology, for example, can be applied to the development of nonsurgical methods of contraception for dogs, or to saving endangered species of canines.

Transgenic experiments. These involve the transfer of genetic material from one organism, or species, to another. For example, insulin can now be produced by genetically modified bacteria. The genes that code for other important human proteins can be inserted into the chromosomes of goats. When successful, these goats can be milked, and the human protein can be extracted from the goat milk.

Animal welfare concerns are raised by a number of transgenic projects. In one, pigs have been modified to mimic the human immunoresponse profile, so that pig organs can be transplanted to humans with reduced probability of rejection. In addition to concerns about the welfare of the pigs used in this research, there are questions about the safety of introducing pig genetic material into humans. For instance, it may be possible for pig genetic material to harbor latent viruses that will become virulent following transplantation.

Other genetic technology. Gene technology offers the promise of alternatives to the use of animals in testing. DNA markers, for example, may make it possible to evaluate chemical toxicity without using animals. Genetically modified tissue cultures could also reduce or eliminate the use of animals in testing. On the other hand, a growing number of genetically altered mouse strains points to the increased use of mice in a wide variety of research applications. This factor undoubtedly weighs heavily in the ongoing debate over extending the protections of the Animal Welfare Act to mice used in research.

In the end, whether biotechnology becomes a demon that causes more animal suffering will depend on the vigilance of the animal protection community and public participation in the ongoing debates. Modern genetic methods can either hold the answer to diseases and ailments that have plagued man and animals for thousands of years, or they can be the key to self-destruction.

1931 Dr. Cornelius Rhoads, under the auspices of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Investigations, infects human subjects with cancer cells. He later goes on to establish the U.S. Army Biological Warfare facilities in Maryland, Utah, and Panama, and is named to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. While there, he begins a series of radiation exposure experiments on American soldiers and civilian hospital patients.

1932 The Tuskegee Syphilis Study begins. 200 black men diagnosed with syphilis are never told of their illness, are denied treatment, and instead are used as human guinea pigs in order to follow the progression and symptoms of the disease. They all subsequently die from syphilis, their families never told that they could have been treated.

1935 The Pellagra Incident. After millions of individuals die from Pellagra over a span of two decades, the U.S. Public Health Service finally acts to stem the disease. The director of the agency admits it had known for at least 20 years that Pellagra is caused by a niacin deficiency but failed to act since most of the deaths occured within poverty-striken black populations.

1940 Four hundred prisoners in Chicago are infected with Malaria in order to study the effects of new and experimental drugs to combat the disease. Nazi doctors later on trial at Nuremberg cite this American study to defend their own actions during the Holocaust.

1942 Chemical Warfare Services begins mustard gas experiments on approximately 4,000 servicemen. The experiments continue until 1945 and made use of Seventh Day Adventists who chose to become human guinea pigs rather than serve on active duty.

1943 In response to Japan's full-scale germ warfare program, the U.S. begins research on biological weapons at Fort Detrick, MD.

1944 U.S. Navy uses human subjects to test gas masks and clothing. Individuals were locked in a gas chamber and exposed to mustard gas and lewisite.

1945 Project Paperclip is initiated. The U.S. State Department, Army intelligence, and the CIA recruit Nazi scientists and offer them immunity and secret identities in exchange for work on top secret government projects in the United States.

1945 "Program F" is implemented by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). This is the most extensive U.S. study of the health effects of fluoride, which was the key chemical component in atomic bomb production. One of the most toxic chemicals known to man, fluoride, it is found, causes marked adverse effects to the central nervous system but much of the information is squelched in the name of national security because of fear that lawsuits would undermine full-scale production of atomic bombs.

1946 Patients in VA hospitals are used as guinea pigs for medical experiments. In order to allay suspicions, the order is given to change the word "experiments" to "investigations" or "observations" whenever reporting a medical study performed in one of the nation's veteran's hospitals.

1947 Colonel E.E. Kirkpatrick of the U.S. Atomic Energy Comission issues a secret document (Document 07075001, January 8, 1947) stating that the agency will begin administering intravenous doses of radioactive substances to human subjects.

1947 The CIA begins its study of LSD as a potential weapon for use by American intelligence. Human subjects (both civilian and military) are used with and without their knowledge.

1950 Department of Defense begins plans to detonate nuclear weapons in desert areas and monitor downwind residents for medical problems and mortality rates.

1950 I n an experiment to determine how susceptible an American city would be to biological attack, the U.S. Navy sprays a cloud of bacteria from ships over San Franciso. Monitoring devices are situated throughout the city in order to test the extent of infection. Many residents become ill with pneumonia-like symptoms.

1951 Department of Defense begins open air tests using disease-producing bacteria and viruses. Tests last through 1969 and there is concern that people in the surrounding areas have been exposed.

1953 U.S. military releases clouds of zinc cadmium sulfide gas over Winnipeg, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Fort Wayne, the Monocacy River Valley in Maryland, and Leesburg, Virginia. Their intent is to determine how efficiently they could disperse chemical agents.

1953 Joint Army-Navy-CIA experiments are conducted in which tens of thousands of people in New York and San Francisco are exposed to the airborne germs Serratia marcescens and Bacillus glogigii.

1958 LSD is tested on 95 volunteers at the Army's Chemical Warfare Laboratories for its effect on intelligence.

1960 The Army Assistant Chief-of-Staff for Intelligence (ACSI) authorizes field testing of LSD in Europe and the Far East. Testing of the european population is code named Project THIRD CHANCE; testing of the Asian population is code named Project DERBY HAT.

1965 Project CIA and Department of Defense begin Project MKSEARCH, a program to develop a capability to manipulate human behavior through the use of mind-altering drugs.

1965 Prisoners at the Holmesburg State Prison in Philadelphia are subjected to dioxin, the highly toxic chemical component of Agent Orange used in Viet Nam. The men are later studied for development of cancer, which indicates that Agent Orange had been a suspected carcinogen all along.

1966 CIA initiates Project MKOFTEN, a program to test the toxicological effects of certain drugs on humans and animals.

1966 U.S. Army dispenses Bacillus subtilis variant niger throughout the New York City subway system. More than a million civilians are exposed when army scientists drop lightbulbs filled with the bacteria onto ventilation grates.

1967 CIA and Department of Defense implement Project MKNAOMI, successor to MKULTRA and designed to maintain, stockpile and test biological and chemical weapons.

1968 CIA experiments with the possibility of poisoning drinking water by injecting chemicals into the water supply of the FDA in Washington, D.C.

1969 Dr. Robert MacMahan of the Department of Defense requests from congress $10 million to develop, within 5 to 10 years, a synthetic biological agent to which no natural immunity exists.

1970 Funding for the synthetic biological agent is obtained under H.R. 15090. The project, under the supervision of the CIA, is carried out by the Special Operations Division at Fort Detrick, the army's top secret biological weapons facility. Speculation is raised that molecular biology techniques are used to produce AIDS-like retroviruses.

1970 United States intensifies its development of "ethnic weapons" (Military Review, Nov., 1970), designed to selectively target and eliminate specific ethnic groups who are susceptible due to genetic differences and variations in DNA.

1975 The virus section of Fort Detrick's Center for Biological Warfare Research is renamed the Fredrick Cancer Research Facilities and placed under the supervision of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) . It is here that a special virus cancer program is initiated by the U.S. Navy, purportedly to develop cancer-causing viruses. It is also here that retrovirologists isolate a virus to which no immunity exists. It is later named HTLV (Human T-cell Leukemia Virus).

1977 Senate hearings on Health and Scientific Research confirm that 239 populated areas had been contaminated with biological agents between 1949 and 1969. Some of the areas included San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Key West, Panama City, Minneapolis, and St. Louis.

1985 According to the journal Science (227:173-177), HTLV and VISNA, a fatal sheep virus, are very similar, indicating a close taxonomic and evolutionary relationship.

1986 According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (83:4007-4011), HIV and VISNA are highly similar and share all structural elements, except for a small segment which is nearly identical to HTLV. This leads to speculation that HTLV and VISNA may have been linked to produce a new retrovirus to which no natural immunity exists.

1986 A report to Congress reveals that the U.S. Government's current generation of biological agents includes: modified viruses, naturally occurring toxins, and agents that are altered through genetic engineering to change immunological character and prevent treatment by all existing vaccines.

1987 Department of Defense admits that, despite a treaty banning research and development of biological agents, it continues to operate research facilities at 127 facilities and universities around the nation.

1990 More than 1500 six-month old black and hispanic babies in Los Angeles are given an "experimental" measles vaccine that had never been licensed for use in the United States. CDC later admits that parents were never informed that the vaccine being injected to their children was experimental.

1994 With a technique called "gene tracking," Dr. Garth Nicolson at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX discovers that many returning Desert Storm veterans are infected with an altered strain of Mycoplasma incognitus, a microbe commonly used in the production of biological weapons. Incorporated into its molecular structure is 40 percent of the HIV protein coat, indicating that it had been man-made.

1994 Senator John D. Rockefeller issues a report revealing that for at least 50 years the Department of Defense has used hundreds of thousands of military personnel in human experiments and for intentional exposure to dangerous substances. Materials included mustard and nerve gas, ionizing radiation, psychochemicals, hallucinogens, and drugs used during the Gulf War .

1995 U.S. Government admits that it had offered Japanese war criminals and scientists who had performed human medical experiments salaries and immunity from prosecution in exchange for data on biological warfare research.

1995 Dr. Garth Nicolson, uncovers evidence that the biological agents used during the Gulf War had been manufactured in Houston, TX and Boca Raton, Fl and tested on prisoners in the Texas Department of Corrections.

The story of 'N', who took undercover footage of primate experiments conducted at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem

While you are reading this story, the hero of the following article is living far away, at a remote rain forest in the Amazon area of Peru. 'N' is working there to plant trees that were cut down by humans, in order to give back the local monkeys their lost habitat. The day following this interview, 'N', a 25 year-old woman from Kfar Saba [an Israeli city] left Israel with a stated purpose of never coming back. A main factor in this decision is connected to other monkeys who are held inside laboratories around Israel.

To be more specific, we are talking about Malish, Fred, Jade and Simon, the monkeys that 'N' took footage of, inside the basement of the Hebrew University in Givat Ram, Jerusalem, at the time that the university researches were drilling holes in their skulls, dripping oxygen water in them, fixing their heads to chairs and keeping them standing for a whole day to recover from surgery.

Even though laboratory monkeys are officially held inside academic institutions all around Israel, never before did the public see any footage from inside these laboratories, and not by chance. The entities involved in these experiments - academic institutions, researchers, drug companies and the owners of the breeding farms supplying monkeys for research, are not interested in publicizing the horrific pictures, knowing that such coverage would inevitably stir up a public debate, with questions rising in regard to the necessity of such experiments, the conditions in which the monkeys are being held, the skill level of the researchers, etc.

'N' was the first person who was able to penetrate the site of these experiments and document them in footage. Among that was the footage exposed on the Israeli TV channel 2, three weeks ago. She did it while posing as a janitor at the animal compound in Givat Ram, while using different undercover cameras.

"It's not as if the situation is better in Peru or in other parts of the world", she explains, "but at least there they abuse (animals) in Spanish, so I can't understand. The thought that these things are taking place in my country and by its scientific establishment is unbearable".

McGuyver from Jerusalem

'N' has been active for several years in environmental struggles, such as fighting globalization and the trans-Israel highway. She went through veterinary technician training and started taking Biology classes for B.S. degree at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

"During the first 6 months of school", she recalls, "I was fighting issues such as whether we need to dissect sharks or abuse locust, together with a group of students we set a precedent in which we were not required to participate in such experiments and we had to submit a written assignment instead."

"From the beginning of the year there were leaflets hanging on the walls looking for "people to work in the animal house". I was very interested to know what was going on in there. I called the number displayed in the ad and scheduled an interview. I met with Tsvi Yona, an old person who had been working in there for 35 years and is in charge of the animal house. He showed me the animals: rabbits, mice, a turkey, and the four monkeys, three of whom with some device drilled inside their heads. I was suppose to be his helper, work between 6 to 9 in the morning cleaning cages and feeding the animals."

"At the end of the interview I told him I would go back home and think, because I was terrified of what I had seen there. I started calling different organizations to find out if it would be worth it to go inside there. I got in touch with a certain organization which helped me with equipment, undercover cameras etc. I told Tsvi Yona that I would be coming in to work the next day."

'N' is more or less the antithesis to the person you can imagine in such a situation. She is a short skinny girl that talks in a silent and shy manner. Any assertiveness or fame seeking is beyond her. Only the determination glowing from her dark eyes might explain how she managed to work for two months inside a place that became a torture chamber for her. "Yona started teaching me how to clean the cages", she tells. "Always starting with the rabbits, in the same order of cages and using the same body motions. During the two weeks I worked with him I wasn't able to learn the exact order of body motions and it caused him a lot of frustration. He shouted at me, lectured, held my hands from behind while holding me and cleaning with my hands. One day he told me that if I would succeed in learning the secret of cleaning shit he would let me work alone on the holiday eve. The idea of spending several hours alone with the monkeys and my own set of keys was alluring."

A Monkey for 3,000 Dollars

The only reason that 'N' continued scrubbing cages was her anticipation for filming equipment she received. The expected cameras didn't arrive until after two weeks had passed, in which Yona was threatening to fire her. The first time she arrived to work with the equipment did not come out as a remarkable success. "When I came back home I discovered that no picture was taken, only white snow."

"When I went back to the animal house Yona took me to meet the researchers. It was in this way I met the researcher Volodya Yakovlev (E-mail: volodya@vms.huji.ac.il ), who was very excited from the interest I expressed in his research. From talking to him I discovered these are Macaca fascicularis monkeys [crab-eating macaques] who were purchased from the Mazor [BFC] primate breeding farm for $3,000. Yakovlev told me several things that amazed me, such as: "People don't realize that if the monkey's life [inside the laboratories] were not good, they would not work. There are some people who aren't even willing to dissect a frog", or "several years ago they found a monkey infected with Ebola in a primate breeding farm in the USA. The government burned down the entire farm - with the monkeys in it. They could have tested them, one by one without harming the business, but the government does not care about private people money".

After several hours of discussion we went down to bring the monkey named Malish, the smallest and sweetest out of the four monkeys there. At that time his head was still normal [prior to any experiments], and he was just being trained. We brought him up in the elevator using the monkey restraint chair covered with a box. The researchers explained that they covered his head so he does not get scared from moving around. We placed him in a tiny dark room with a television. We closed the door and watched him through closed-circuit television screens in another room close by. The television screen Malish was watching displayed small sequences of different shapes, with one of the shapes repeating in the different sequences. At the moment he saw a shape that had been displayed before, he was supposed to press a button. When he pressed the button correctly, several drops of water came out from the tube connected close to his mouth. Before the training Malish was not given any drinking water in order to keep him thirsty.

Tanya Orlov, the second researcher, came in the room and Volodya introduced us. I was able to establish a good relationship with them and to be in a position that they would call me before any surgery so I could come and help them. That way I was able to quit my job at the animal house."

Two months of Misery

'N' was indeed spared of Tsvi Yona's hassles in the animal house, but never imagined the mental stress she was about to deal with several days later, misery that was stretched between May 15th to July 19th this year. Before arriving to the first surgery, she was equipped with modern filming devices. "Apart from the two researchers", she tells, "there were two small animal veterinarians who knew nothing about monkeys, and Ifat and Uzi, the Ein Kerem [another Jerusalem research facility] animal house veterinarians, who came as guests. They only wanted me to watch, so I could help in the following surgeries that were going to take place without any veterinarians present."

"Malish was lying down on his stomach on a special device that was attached to him through the ears, eyes and mouth. His head was fixed about ten centimeters above the device. At the beginning they shaved his head and cleaned it. The cut through the skin and flesh and exposed his skull. In the skull they drilled two holes using an electrical drill. In one hole they inserted a screw that is used to attach him to the chair and keep him immobilized, and in the second hole they inserted a chamber leading to the brain cavity. They inserted a steel wire into his eye to make him look straight."

"In order to fix the chambers inside the two holes they screwed 20 more screws in his skull using an electric drill. They covered everything with a red plastic cover. The surgery took 6 hours. The atmosphere in the room was great. The veterinarians explained such basic things to the researchers regarding the anesthesia, that even as a failing veterinarian technician I was astonished at their lack of knowledge. They were joking a lot among themselves. The researchers were telling about all kinds of medical screw-ups they did in the past which cost some monkeys their lives. I was sitting on the side, hoping not to faint."

"In the middle of the surgery I left for a 15 minute break and I ran to the restroom to check to see if the camera was working. While I was checking the camera, a short-circuit happened and a flame came out of the camera. I was sitting in the restroom with a burning camera laughing. I realized all this suffering was not documented and I felt much worse than before. At the time of the surgery, Ifat the veterinarian suggested the researchers give them the Valium she brought with her, which expired in 1996. They refused, saying that they already have enough Valium that was already expired. She told them that in the Ein-Kerem animal house they buy 1 year old monkeys from the Mazor [BFC] primate farm that weigh only one kilo [2.2 pounds] on arrival and only add one more kilo to their weight as they grow. She explained it is the result of the "non-optimal" conditions, in which they are held."

"At the end of the surgery the veterinarians left and I suggested the researchers take a lunch break after their hard work. They happily agreed and left me alone with Malish. Malish was sitting on the floor recovering from the anesthesia. I closed all the doors and took pictures with still and video cameras that I took out of my bag. I was able to close everything and open the doors a second before they came back. The researchers placed a plastic leash on Malish and put him in the monkey restraint chair, in which he was half standing and unable to move his head that is fixed upwards to prevent him from swallowing any saliva. He was left in that position until that evening, contrary to the law that forbids leaving him in such a position for more than 10 minutes. I gave a fruit meal to the rest of the monkeys, while I was taking pictures of Malish recovering. The researchers thanked me and told me they will call me anytime there is something interesting".

All for an Article

The "something interesting" came soon afterward, in the form of another surgery conducted on Malish. "He was shivering for a week following the surgery", tells 'N' while she experiences a different kind of shiver,"(he) simply could not recover. The next surgery, which took place a week later, was briefer, only 3 hours. Malish was thrown into a frantic breathing distress and I was totally hysterical. My job was to check his pulse, since there were not any veterinarians around any more [during surgeries].

Several days later Jade [one of the other monkeys in the laboratory] underwent surgery. He had three holes in his head: one used to keep him restrained in the chair and two others used to insert probes. Tanya cleaned the holes with oxygen water that fermented inside his brain. I wasn't even able to film it out of panic. Then she injected him with a substance that paralyzed his brain cells, according to a sketch she had. That day she injected the substance to the wrong place. The monkey started drooling and almost fainted. He didn't do the assignments he was trained to do. Tanya didn't even know exactly where she injected the substance to and started lecturing me about the different parts of the brain. She said: "This is very interesting, maybe it is worth checking". That is the typical way - experimenting and mistaking".

"A three year long research was conducted. The research was trying to investigate which specific brain cells are active while using the visual memory. For that purpose, they use electrodes and a special computer program, which analyze the brain cells activity. All the surgeries were being done, knowing that this computer program was about to arrive, but it never arrived even after two years of research".

"I passed on the findings of the research to medical doctor Elad Feigin from the "Shearey Tzedek" hospital, and it was discovered that the researchers had a certain theory regarding the monkeys' visual memory, which was slightly contradicted during the experiments. It awarded them with an article in the prestigious magazine "Nature", that's all. No scientific breakthrough. The monkeys were all tortured for this. In the next surgery of the monkey named Simon I was caught. Tanya had already suspected me and when I arrived she said: "You have an undercover camera, right?" I was exhausted, after more than two months and I started to stutter. She said, "It is really not nice what you did", I answered: "And what about what you are doing?" We started a long argument debating whether what they are doing is legal. Unfortunately, she was right in most points. At the end Tanya told me: "I want you to go". Half an hour after I left Dr. Roni Kalman (E-mail: ronyk@md.huji.ac.il ), who is in charge on all animal houses at the Hebrew University, called me to notify me that I am not allowed to go inside any laboratory. It's not as if I could have anyway. In the previous two months I stopped eating and sleeping, I was a wreck. It prevented me from studying, it seemed really sick to submit school assignments inside a building where monkeys are being tortured in its basement, as if nothing is wrong. Eventually I stopped attending the university. This story gave me a feeling that 'I want to escape from this messed up country'. In Peru at least, the shit is not going to be my country's."

A war inside the establishment

The images 'N' exposed, as well as her descriptions, caused immediate shock among most of the public. But there is still a basic myth flowing in the air, according to which such experiments are supposed to save human lives. In other words: it is horrible what these monkeys are going through but there is no other choice.

Dr. Elad Feigin, 44, a senior surgeon in the "Shearey-Zedek" hospital, thinks differently and he is one of the first medical doctors in Israel who publicly speaks against animal experiments, and practically against the medical establishment that they belong to. "A biology student in the Hebrew University who does not agree to participate in animal experiments", he says, "gets a lower mark. He is discouraged and then, when his teacher tells him that the mark can be bent, he agrees. There is a 100% trust in this system, but when you check different studies in depth, there are 30% laps in the results. The medical establishment in Israel is hostile to views such as mine. Six months ago I circulated a petition in my hospital calling for an end to animal experiments. Only five doctors signed, even though several dozen others agree with my views. One doctor who signed asked that her signature be taken off the petition since she is afraid of hurting her academic promotion. It is also connected to her work in the hospital, because if you are a professor you get promoted. Personally speaking, this conversation in certainly not going to help my own promotion".

Feigin sees a principal moral problem in using animals for experiments. But he deliberately emphasizes the practical aspect of the argument that bypasses the moral question. "I am troubled by people such as professor Asa Kasher, who says it is possible to cause suffering to animals in order to cure humans", he explains, "without dealing with the question whether it can cure or not, I haven't yet found an animal experiment that was justified. In the 21 century it is possible to deal with public health research without using any animals, but rather through human cell cultures and utilizing new technologies of computers and simulators. The medical history is full of such (animal) experiments that only caused much harm."

"For example, Dr. Savin, who invented the polio vaccine, told the United States Senate in 1948 that the use of the vaccine was delayed for a long time because of a wrong perception that was based on monkeys as a model, and was found efficient only later in human clinical trials; In England during the 80's, a drug treatment for inhalation killed 3,500 kids, after being successfully tested on dozens of animals. Penicillin kills hamsters and guinea pigs, if it was tested on these animals it would have never been used to treat humans. The thalidomide, an anti-nausea drug given to pregnant women caused the birth of babies missing limbs or with fins, was put on the market after being successfully tested on animals."

"There is one study which showed that there is a less than 50% chance that animals would react and have the same side affects to drugs such as humans have. So what is the idea in doing it? Not to mention military experiments, in which doctors are trained to perform emergency surgeries by performing experiments on dogs and cats for several hours. The anatomy of a dog is very different from the human anatomy. Dogs have fur, different type of skin etc, so how can you learn from dogs about human procedures such as inserting a tube to the trachea or inserting an infusion to a central vein? And worse, the Israeli army refuses to give commissioned ranks to doctors who refuse to take part in these experiments. The army will recruit them and count on them but will then punish them. If you take away the freedom of conscience from young medical doctors, don't expect them to make honest decisions later".

Ita Shtein, 35, worked for 15 years as a laboratory technician in the laboratory of the immunology department at the Hebrew University in Ein-Kerem. The laboratory worked mainly on cancer research and the experiments were performed on mice. Her conclusions after 15 years or work there are unequivocal: "Today it is possible to drastically minimize these experiments. Nowadays every researcher with money can buy animals and use them, and that is an unbearable phenomena. It is hard to stop, because we are dealing with people's careers. Changing the system requires a lot of money. Not to mention that each experiment also opens the door to many other experiments, which translates to money and fame. I am convinced that more than half of the experiments I was involved with were completely unnecessary. Killing animals is the easy way. Personally, I feel very sorry for what I have done throughout the years, and in my opinion most of the workers there suffer from severe remorse."

c. HALACHIC PRECEDENT FOR USING TAINTED DATA

Historically, one can trace the treatment of this dilemma back to the Babylonian Talmud. The Babylonian Talmud was the written edition of the Oral Law (believed to have been transmitted by God to Moses on Mount Sinai, and was later transcribed to prevent its being forgotten). The Talmud originally explored the issue of human experiments. Let us look, then, at some Talmudic examples:

i. Cleopatra's Experiments on Embryo Formation

The Babylonian Talmud in Niddah (30b) relates the legal controversy between Rabbi Ishmael and the Rabbis concerning the amount of time it took a male and female embryo to formulate. R.Ishmael referred to Cleopatra's experimental data to prove his theory that a male fetus takes 40 days to fashion fully and a female fetus takes 80 days.

When Cleopatra's handmaids were sentenced to death under government order, she subjected them to insemination and subsequent operations. Upon opening their wombs, Cleopatra discovered that the male embryos were fully fashioned on the 41st day after conception and the female embryos were fully fashioned on the 81st day.

The Talmud questioned the scientific accuracy of Cleopatra's experiment. Assurances were made that the experiments were conducted and recorded in an accurate manner, because prior to the handmaid's insemination, they were forced to swallow a destructive serum designed to obliterate and scatter any existing semen in their wombs. This abortive precaution served as a guarantee against prior inseminations and embryo formations before the experiments began. Furthermore, a warden was appointed to carefully monitor the girls, to prevent them from being inseminated before the commencement of Cleopatra's experiment.

In attempting to discredit Cleopatra's experiment and results, the Rabbis argued that: "no one adduces proof from fools." This seems to mean that one should not trust the results of a murderous "quack" on the fringes of professional medicine. The Talmudic passage concluded in favor of Rabbi Ishmael's original premise, that boys formulate in 40 days and girls formulate in 80 days. However, no comment was made as to the propriety of quoting and relying on Cleopatra's unethical research. We are left to speculate.

ii. Rabbi Ishmael's Students Experiment on a Human

The Babylonian Talmud in Bechorot (45) related that the students of Rabbi Ishmael dissected the body of a prostitute who had been condemned to be burnt by the King. They examined her body and found a total of 252 joints and limbs. The students returned to R. Ishmael (who claimed that the human body contains 248 joints and limbs and told him of their experiment and conclusion, and challenged him for an explanation of the 6 limb discrepancy, which he provided.

R. Ishmael offered no comment at to the propriety of his student's experiment. Again, we are left to speculate.

iii. Rabbi Gamliel's Test to Determine Virginity

The Babylonian Talmud in Ketuboth (10b) related that a Groom came before Rabbi Gamliel stating that he had sexual intercourse with his newly-wedded bride, and did not find any traces of virginal blood (thereby accusing his bride of not being a virgin). R. Gamliel asked his attendant to bring to the court one virgin and one girl that was no longer a virgin. He had each girl sit on top of an open barrel of wine. When the girl who was not a virgin sat on the barrel, the smell of the wine was noticeable from her mouth. When the virgin sat on the barrel, the smell of the wine did not go through her body and did not emerge from her mouth.

R. Gamliel placed the bride in question on the barrel and the smell of wine was not noticeable from her mouth. R. Gamliel assured the Groom that his experiment conclusively proved that the bride was a virgin.

R. Gamliel was questioned for experimenting on the two handmaids. Perhaps he should have examined the bride from the very beginning. He answered that he had heard a tradition that the wine barrel experiment was a reliable test, but that he had never seen it done in practice. He felt that it would have been improper to test the effectiveness of the wine barrel experiment on a Jewish woman, so he experimented with the handmaid. Again, we are left to speculate.

It has been asserted that the Talmud's silence as to the propriety of quoting and relying on the data from the above-mentioned experiments suggests that the Talmud had no moral qualms about using the data for the advancement of legal, medicinal and factual determinations. Some Talmudic experts have held that the Talmud's silence regarding the propriety of quoting these experiments shows that the Rabbis were only concerned with: the issue of embryo development, the number of limbs in a body, the determination of a woman's virginity, and not sufficiently concerned with the propriety of the experiment at that time to merit a comment. That is not to say that the Rabbis were not concerned at all about it. It just means that there were more pressing concerns that merited their comments on that day. It is therefore unclear whether the Talmud's use of these experiments justifies use of the Nazi data.

If the Nazi data could be used to benefit society it remains questionable whether it can be derived by analogy from the Talmudic account of these three experiments.

iv. Rabbi Moshe Feinstien's Responsa

In Igres Moshe, Even Haezer, Rabbi Moshe Feinstien ("Reb Moshe") was asked whether one can listen and give credit to the songs composed by a heretic (apikorus). In response, Reb Moshe distinguished between holy and non-holy matters. He held that holy objects such as Torah scrolls, Tfillin, and Mezuzos, etc., that were prepared by an apikorus cannot be used. The moral character and level of religious observance of the scribe is very relevant to the holy object's subsequent use (perhaps because of the many fundamental religious laws and prayers that are incorporated in the final product).

Songs, however, are devoid of any holiness and therefore can be listened to and enjoyed in lieu of its composer's beliefs. While it is not advisable to listen to the words of a wicked person, there is no halachic sanction against it. Reb Moshe compared the non-holiness of songs to other mundane objects such as machines, inventions and medicines. In such cases the religiosity and moral fiber of the composer, mechanic, inventor and scientist is completely irrelevant to the object's subsequent use. People have no religious expectations, nor do they seek any religious fulfillment from inanimate objects. Therefore, Reb Moshe allows their use, even though they were created by wicked men.

Therefore, there is a potential halachic basis to permit the use of: the German Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen automobiles, the "Dachau" rewarming techniques, the "Clauberg" fertility treatment, the "Heissmeyer" tuberculosis treatment, and even the "Mengele" data on genetics. Halachically, the data could be used in lieu of its abominable origins.
